What a neat place! It's informational. Got to touch a live horse shoe crab, and other living sea creatures! Very interactive!! Also a gift shop where the money you pay for certain items goes to helping them preserve the island for the wild horses.
One of the best days of my life. This experience was a bucket list for me and it didn't disappoint. can't wait to come back and see the horses cross.
Very nice and knowledgeable people in a beautiful natural sanctuary. Visiting is always a treat. Gorgeous pristine shoreline, wildlife and of course wild horses. The rangers at the visitor's center know the area well and are anxious to help you navigate the area and help you find your outing itinerary.
Great exhibits! I loved the information on how the barrier island changes, and my kids loved the touch tank where they got to hold a live horseshoe crab! There are also large aquariums that showcase some of the other aquatic species that can be found in the area. Naturalists and Rangers are on hand to answer questions about the island and it's inhabitants. Great nature programming is offered for all ages...even guided kayak tours! Some of the programs are free, and some have a fee. They will give you a calendar of upcoming events at the front desk if you ask. The gift shop is a little pricey but it's because they only sell very high quality items. If you are looking for cheap plastic sand toys there are plenty of other places in the area for that. The visitor's center also has very nice restrooms that I think are open even when the center is closed, but I'm not 100% sure about that. I haven't yet had the opportunity to hike the nature trails that are located behind the center...I look forward to that on my next visit. I definitely recommend that you check this place out if you are in the area; it's a must see if you are visiting the island.
The visitors center here is very interesting and informative. Lots to learn and see! There are many different types of gifts to buy in the gift shop, and even foster one of the horses financially for only $35.00!
